Mapping & Aerial Photography

It is becoming more these days common to incorporate a map or aerial photographs into traffic control plans or other civil engineering projects. The White papers area of this web site contains several free white papers on the subject.

Aerial Photographs

There are at least 3 ways you can use Aerial Photographs with traffic control plans
1. Import into your drawing and drop traffic signs and symbols onto the photograph
2. Import into your drawing and trace over with lines and polylines to create your own vector map then discard the photo - ( gets over any copyright issues)

3. Use the photo as a reference view - great for seeing what's on the highway without actually being there

Here is one source:

Google Earth : Free for personal use , reasonable quality

Mapping

There is only one type of map that we reccomend for traffic control diagram work (quite honestly the maps you can get from multimap are not good enough)

Publish your CAD files to PDF and DWF

Publishing to DWF is a standard feature with AutoCAD / LT and Intellicad whereas publishing to PDF is not.

CAD TO PDF

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional
Pros - Integrates nicely into windows environments, will create pdfs from almost any type of windows document, does a really good job with colour fill traffic management layouts and of course does a whole host of other things

30 day trial available

Cons - A tad expensive at $995 if all you will use it for is coverting CAD to PDF

Bluebeam Lite with Revu
An ideal PDF solution for firms that need a smart, simple and affordable solution to create, view and markup PDF files. Like Acrobat professional it does a really good job with colour fill traffic management layouts

30 day trial available - recommended

Cons - None unless you aren't prepared to pay $99

Any DWG to PDF

Great tool, quick and easy to download and use, does a good job with CAD drawings although it is not so hot on colour fill traffic management layouts.

Pros - Free if you don't want to batch convert

Cons - Colour fill not handled so well

DWF Tools - They are free so get them!

FREE Autodesk DWF Viewer - Essential for your audience to view DWG files

(see examples in the samples area)

FREE Autodesk DWF Writer - Supposed to be for people who don't have AutoCAD or LT , does a great job with Intellicad drawings
